John’s abstract oil paintings are closely informed by his parallel life as a composer and musician, and are a means of interrogating the relationship between music and process painting. His practice is ritualistic and physical, heavily influenced by jazz and improvised music. He starts a work by laying down colours and marks in a somewhat dissonant fashion, with the subsequent painting concerned with creating harmony. His practice is perhaps best understood as chasing a sense of resolution whilst simultaneously relinquishing the need to actually resolve.

John graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2026, and also holds a BMus and MusM in Music and Composition from the University of Manchester
